The Perfect Marriage of Art and Science
The evolution of composites or white fillings and adhesives has been truly amazing. The latest materials have allowed us to perform tasks previously considered almost impossible and with great reliability and longevity. The trained practitioner can now mask discoloration, fill spaces between teeth, repair fractures and worn teeth, as well as a host of other procedures at low cost to the patient.
In my opinion, there are three necessary components to placing these fillings optimally:
- Knowledge: consists of post-graduate education in diagnosis, treatment planning, and techniques.
- Materials: having and choosing the correct materials to achieve a predetermined goal is essential. One size does not fill all.
- Experience: perfecting visualization and techniques to artfully reconstruct teeth freehand.
When these three criteria are met, the results can be truly incredible!

Artfully repairing the edges of slightly-worn front teeth to their natural state, as shown here, is a difficult task.

Fractured tooth repaired with composites. Little or no tooth reduction was necessary.

Repaired abraded (notched) tooth near the gum line.

Utilizing a laser allows for access to decay below the gum line. There is no bleeding and post-treatment discomfort is minimal. This allows for a more aesthetic contour of the soft tissue (gums) and easy placement of composites.

Wear on the edges of the lower front teeth is very common. These teeth can be repaired inexpensively and often with no anesthetic.
